EZHelp4U w/ Time: Read Faster and Comprehend More

EZHelp4U w/ Time:
Read Faster and Comprehend More

When we learned to read so many years ago, we learned to repeat the words in our heads as we scanned them with our eyes, but we are not reaching our full potential because our brains can think faster then our eyes can scan.  On average, our brains can scan 450 to 550 wpm (words per minute) while our eyes move about half the speed and scan between 225 to 275 wpm.

The problem is our brains are far too active and because our eye's can't keep up, our brains start to wander.  Fortunately this is a problem we can correct with practice or "exercises".  The issue, quite simply put, is our eyes move to slow.  So we need to exercise them to get them up to speed.  What speed you ask?  The speed of our brain of course.

The following exercise should be done once or twice a day for two weeks.  After that a refresher every month or so will certainly help.  The whole process should take less than 10 minutes as you attempt to increase your scores with each attempt.  Also, choose a paragraph you haven't read before and are not familiar with for more accurate results, but use the same paragraph for each step.  Finally, you will need something to time one minute with, as each step should be one minute long.

1.  Start at the beginning of the paragraph and read normally for 1 minute.

Count the # of lines X 10 = ________

2.  Start at the beginning of the paragraph and use your finger to help guide your eyes across the page and try to read as fast as you can for 1 minute and comprehend what you are reading.  HINT: Take notice of the important words and ignore "and", "or", "of", "the".

Count the # of lines X 10 = ________

3.  Start at the beginning of the paragraph and read twice as fast using your finger and don't worry about the comprehension for 1 minute.

Count the # of lines X 10 = ________

4.  Start at the beginning of the paragraph and read three times as fast using your finger and again, don't worry about the comprehension for 1 minute.

Count the # of lines X 10 = ________

5.  Start at the beginning of the paragraph and read as fast as you can for 1 minute and consider what you are reading and comprehend it.

Count the # of lines X 10 = ________

What you should see is an increase in your score during the exercise, as well as an increase from exercise to exercise.  Doing this for 2 weeks will help train your eyes to keep up with your brain, thus allowing you to save time and read faster!

Once you feel confident, you can try using more advanced speed reading techniques such as using a straight edge and reading multiple lines at a time.  Best of luck to you and here are some additional resources you may like.

Good morning.

My biggest error in life is simple.  I try to be too much to too many people.  Thus leaving certain things untouched for too long, not because I don't want to do it, but quite simply I am off doing something else to try to help someone or even myself.  With this in mind I will be making a few changes to the website.  If you want, please give me some feedback either here or on the site.  Thanks!  :-)  EZ
